Training for FAMACHA Certification 2026

  • Thursday, April 16, 2026, 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Hosted by CCE Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties

Attention all sheep and goat producers, 4-H and FFA members, and livestock operation owners!

Learn how to use the FAMACHA system to identify anemia in sheep and goats and make informed deworming decisions. FAMACHA is a management tool that allows producers to selectively treat sheep and goats by identifying animals showing signs of anemia. Anemia is commonly caused by barber pole worm (Haemonchus contortus), the primary internal parasite affecting grazing small ruminants in the United States. This hands-on training focuses on managing barber pole worm, reducing unnecessary treatments, and improving herd health.

What participants will learn

  • How the FAMACHA system works
  • How to score sheep and goats correctly
  • When treatment is needed—and when it isn’t
  • How targeted deworming helps slow parasite resistance
  • Best practices for pasture-based parasite control

Fee

$25 per person/farm
