Skills gained in becoming a Youth Mental Health First Aider include:
- Recognizing signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges.
- Differentiating between typical adolescent development/behaviors, and signs of likely mental health challenges where first aider outreach can provide crucial preventive impacts.
- Understanding of the best ways to interact with a young person experiencing mental health or substance use challenge(s) or crisis.
- Knowledge and comfort with connecting an at-risk youth to local professional help and community services.
- Increased understanding of trauma, substance use, self-care, & social media usage/cyber-bullying impacts.
