Permaculture Land Evaluation
Friday November 3rd from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County 232 Plaza Road, Kingston, NY 12401
Join CCE educator Erik Schellenberg and guest Mark Krawczyk, owner of Keyline Vermont, to learn about land assessment methods and techniques used in permaculture design. We will cover the concept of the Scale of Permanence, developed by mining and agricultural engineer P.A. Yeomans. You will learn how to identify important landscape features, and list assets and challenges to the land relative to your goals. We will spend the first part of the day indoors for a lecture-style class, and the remainder of the afternoon out on a site visit where we will identify the concepts and features discussed in the classroom. The class will cover climate, landform, water, access, trees, structures, subdivisions & fencing, and soil.
As a student of permaculture design since 2000, Mark has explored tree crop and agroforestry systems, coppice forestry, natural building, traditional woodcrafts, community organizing and both small and broadacre site design. Additionally, he works as a community educator/organizer with the non-profit he helped found, Burlington Permaculture, as the owner/operator of RivenWoodCrafts - a traditional woodcraft and natural construction business, as a natural building educator with Seven Generations Natural Builders and as a builder and site design consultant with EcoSystems Design Inc. and the Natural Design/Build Cooperative.
