Join us for a valuable 3-class series for new landowners and aspiring or beginning farmers. You may take any or all of the classes, which will be held at our office, 232 Plaza Road (Hannaford Plaza) in Kingston, and taught by Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Agriculture Educators*:

  • Christian Malsatzski, Small Acreage/Urban Farming and Ag. Team Leader, CCE Ulster County
  • Jason Detzel, Livestock and Pasture Educator, CCE Ulster County
  • Erik Schellenberg, Vegetable Educator and GAPs Specialist, CCE Ulster and Orange Counties

*Guest lecturers will depend upon availability, but will include farmers and other CCE specialists. Agenda schedule is tentative.

Friday, September 15: New and Aspiring Land Owner Class

If you are a current or prospective property owner interested in better land management of open space, woodland, or agricultural land, this class will provide information to broaden (or maybe narrow!) your perspectives on what is possible and practical.

Friday, September 29: Vegetable and Fruit Production for Beginning Farmers

There are so many variables to consider when beginning even a small operation that it can be daunting! The goal of this class will be to provide some successful models that you can use to frame your future business.

Friday, October 6: Livestock Production for Beginning Farmers

This class will cover everything from keeping animals for domestic use to small and mid-scale commercial animal operations, with information on fowl, swine, ruminants, bees, aquaculture, and wild animals. Instructors Jason Detzel and Christian Malsatzki will cover the following topics:

  • So you think you want livestock? History and overview of raising livestock in NY and some success stories (species specific)
  • Land: Matching the class of animal to what you’ve got; finding the right land for your operation
  • Water: Getting water to animals efficiently
  • Fencing and Housing: Keeping your animals safe and secure
  • Labor: All livestock require daily attention; solo ventures, partnerships, and employees
  • Markets: Where to sell, regulations, and processing considerations
  • Case Studies (guest speaker)
  • How to develop a successful startup (checklist)

Registration is $40 per person, per class, or pay only $100 for all 3 classes. Space is limited to 30 people so register early to save your seat!

Pre-registration is required - deadline is 2 days before each class (Sept. 13, Sept. 27 and Oct. 4, respectively).
