Join us for an exciting day on the farm where the general public can learn about local agriculture, especially about local dairy farms! Melissa Menendez and her family of Sprucegate Holsteins will graciously swing open their barn doors on Saturday, October 5th, from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM to host the 32nd Open House on the Farm in Walden, New York.
Over the years, Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County, along with numerous volunteers, dedicate their time to teach and share their knowledge about agriculture in Orange County. There will also be plenty of activities for the whole family, including hay rides, visits with animals, a calf naming contest, 4-H and youth activities, the presence of the Orange County Dairy Princess and much more. Lunch and dairy products will be available. Come join us expand the knowledge of agriculture here in Orange County!
Sprucegate Farm is home to 60 registered Holsteins, a few Jerseys and quite a few registered Holstein heifers. The farm consists of 240 acres in which 155 are tillable. There are approximately 60 acres of corn and 27 acres of alfalfa that is turned into silage. The cattle use these home grown forages to produce on average 21,500 pounds of milk.
