Become a Master Food Preserver!

Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County is hosting a three-day Master Food Preserver Certification training. Participants need no prior knowledge of food preservation to attend, but must be available to attend the entire training, be willing to share knowledge with others, and be comfortable participating in a variety of hands-on activities. 

Over the 3 day course you will learn:

  • The science of food preservation including food safety
  • Gain hands-on experience with:
    • boiling water bath canning
    • pressure canning
    • jelled products
    • quick pickling
  • Observe demonstrations of freezing and drying, plus fermentation

This course is the first step toward becoming a Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Food Preserver. Upon completion of the three-day training and a passing score of 85% or higher on the final written exam you will be given a certificate of completion. To receive certification as a Master Food Preserver you will need 40 overall hours of hands-on food preservation experience with 20 of the hours being volunteer work with Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County.

Examples of volunteer work are:

  • Providing information at local farmers’ markets, fairs, or community events.
  • Conducting presentations and workshops as part of a team or on your own for community groups and schools.
  • Preparing educational displays, writing articles for newsletters, newspapers, etc.

The Master Food Preserver Training is cost is $395 per person and includes meals. Scholarships are available. Minimum number if registrants is 18 and maximum is 21. It is not financially feasible to run this training without the minimum number of registrants. Contact Meghan at 845-344-1234 or my468@cornell.edu for more information.
